Writing & films of Shabnam Piryaei
Join Oakland's Shabnam Piryaei in a presention of her much-anticipated new collection of poems, Nothing is Wasted, published by The Operating System in Brooklyn, N.Y. She will read from her work and show selections of her cinema, including the short films "dollhouse," "Miriam's Song" and "A Time to Speak," made from scripts from her poetry, which have been screened at festivals & galleries around the world. Her novel, FORWARD, was published in 2014 and an earlier selection of poems, ode to fragile, appeared in 2010. She has received the Amy Award, given by Poets & Writers to promising women poets under the age of 30 living on Long Island and Metropolitan New York City where she was at the time attending graduate school, & the Transit of the Aim Prize, given by Unsaid Magazine to the poet published there "whose work both embraces and conveys the maxim of poem 1109 by Emily Dickinson." Piryaei was born in Iran, spent her youth and college years in Berkeley and is currently enrolled in a doctoral program of the University of California, Riverside. This is event is part of a regular series of Saturday afternoon salons featuring writers and other workers in creative fields who are contributing to the cultural fabric of the local community.
