Come bid a fond farewell to poet Lise Gaston, who is returning to her native Canada after completing her doctoral work at the University of California, Berkeley. Gaston’s debut collection of poetry, Cityscapes in Mating Season(Signature Editions, Winnepeg), has attracted international attention, positioning the poet as an important new feminist voice in the vast arena of North American poetry in English. The book appeared on the League of Canadian Poets’ list of 10 “must-read” books of 2017 and made the best-seller list in Edmonton, Alberta shortly after its release. She was a featured reader in UC’s prestigious Holloway Series in Poetry.

She grew up on both sides of Canada, in Fredericton, New Brunswick and Victoria, British Columbia and has also lived in Toronto, Halifax, Montreal and most recently in Edmonton and outside of Canada, too, in Limerick, Ireland and in the local metro area. Her writing has won awards in Arc Poetry Magazine‘s Poem of the Year and How Poems Work contests, and has been selected for Best Canadian Poetry in English 2015“All Lit Up,” an on-line bookselling project of Canada’s Literary Press Group featured her and her work in “Poets Resist,” a blog series “dedicated to poetry as a form of resistance.” Gaston will read from her work in the intimate community room of the 100-year-old Temescal Branch Library just before she heads back north to join the distinguished faculty of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
