Fire of Words

WHEN: Fri, May 8, 2020 - Sat, May 9, 2020 | 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
WHERE: 5205 Telegraph Ave.

Originating as a program taught by John Oliver Simon at Claremont Middle School, Fire of Words moved to Temescal Library in 2017 and aged into a High School porgram, open to any local High School aged students. Students read poetry, play poetry games, and write 1-3 poems a class. Visiting poets and publishing luminaries visit on occasion–in 2019 we had visits from Vi Khi Nao, Sara Nicholson, Julien Poirier, Jared Harvey, and Anise Cinquepalmi. Since I took over the class in 2018, the students have formed a small underground publishing collective, Under the Library Press. They publish a zine every fall and chapbooks in the spring. Students in the class have opportunities to participate in readings and pursue opportunities for publication. Fire of Words is free, though some participants donate to help fund it, and is occasionally supported by grants through California Poets the Schools.
