“The Importance of Art in Times of Duress” with Temescal poet July Westhale and artist/photographer Julia Sparenberg

Join Temescal’s July Westhale, presenting her highly acclaimed collection of poems, Trailer Trash, just published by Kore Press in Tucson, Ariz., that recalls her growing up in the cotton country of southern California. She will be joined by a colleague, Julia Sparenberg, in one of the branch library’s regular Saturday afternoon salons, this one in recognition of National Poetry Month.

Besides reading poems and sharing art, the afternoon will focus on the importance of art during times of duress. Westhale and Sparenberg will talk about their backgrounds, how they stay embodied & how important it is to create records of art during times like these.

July Westhale is the author of Trailer Trash, The Cavalcade, and Occasionally Accurate Science. Her most recent poetry can be found in The National Poetry Review, Prairie Schooner, CALYX, Tupelo Quarterly, RHINO, phoebe, Eleven Eleven, Lunch Ticket, and Quarterly West. Her essays have been nominated for Best American Essays, as well as the Pushcart Prize. She moonlights as a journalist at The Establishment, and her work has appeared in The Huffington Post.

Julia Sparenberg is a photographer, artist and occasional poet. Her work has been seen in San Francisco Magazine, 7×7,  the San Francisco Chronicle, SF Weekly, the San Francisco Bay Guardian, SHOTS magazine, the Examiner and The Urbanist.
